Many people know the “Campanella di Capri", but not everyone knows that behind this precious lucky charm that is usually given to loved ones, there is an ancient legend, that of the Campanina di San Michele. "On the island of Capri lived a little shepherd, very poor and fatherless, who owned no material possessions except his little sheep. One evening, at dusk, he had stopped to pick some flowers and when he turned to call his little sheep, he could no longer find it. Taken by despair, however, he thought he heard a distant bell ringing and, thinking it was the sound of his sheep's bell, he headed towards the tinkling. He ran barefoot through the brambles and over the stones until he reached the edge of a ravine. A sudden light dazzled him: it was Saint Michael on his white horse. "My darling," said the saint, taking off a little bell that hung on his chest, "take it and always follow the sound; it will save you from every danger." The little shepherd brought the gift to his mother and the bell came out of his pockets wrapped in the frame of a four-leaf clover. From then on, his life changed forever and every earthly desire of his was fulfilled. Villa San Michele, now known worldwide, was built on the site of the Saint's apparition.  Since then, the Campanella di Capri has been a symbol of luck and happiness, and legend has it that the Campanella di Capri should be given as a gift to people considered truly special because, with every chime, every wish will come true.
