Many know the “Bell of Capri", but not everyone knows that behind this precious lucky charm usually given to loved ones, there is an ancient legend, that of the Campanina of San Michele. “On the island of Capri lived a little shepherd, very poor and fatherless, he owned no material goods except his little sheep. One evening, at dusk, he stopped to pick some flowers and when he turned to call the little sheep he no longer found it. Taken by despair, however, he seemed to hear a distant ringing and, thinking it was the sound of his sheep’s bell, he headed towards the tinkling. He ran barefoot through the brambles and over the stones until he reached the edge of a ravine. A sudden light dazzled him: it was San Michele on his white horse. “My child,” said the saint, taking off from his neck a little bell that hung on his chest, “take it and always follow the sound, it will save you from every danger.” The little shepherd brought the gift to his mother and the bell came out of his pockets wrapped in the frame of a four-leaf clover. From then on his life changed forever and every earthly desire was fulfilled." On the site of the Saint’s apparition Villa San Michele was built, now known worldwide. Since then the Campanella di Capri has been a symbol of luck and happiness and legend has it that the Bell of Capri should be given to people considered truly special because, at every toll, every wish will come true.
