In the heart of the Rione Sanità there is a unique place in the world: the Fontanelle Cemetery. Here, among thousands of skulls, – or rather, capuzzelle – a fascinating story is hidden.
In the cemetery, in fact, a particular rite took place, of the “anime pezzentelle”, according to which one of the “capuzzelle” to which corresponded a soul from purgatory, a means of communication between the world of the dead and the world of the living.
The faithful adopted a skull, cleaned it, gave it a name, and prayed for its soul… in return, they hoped for graces and favors!
Capuzzelle were indeed believed to have the power to grant the prayers of those who had taken them to heart: hopes big or small, whether to win the lottery or to heal a sick person.
