The Moor's head is deeply connected to the history of Sicily.
The Moor's head is a recurring element in Sicilian culture and its roots go directly back to the history of the island.

It is said that about a thousand years ago, during the rule of the Moors in Sicily, there lived a beautiful young woman who loved to spend her days tending to her plants. One day, from her lush balcony, she was noticed by a Moor passing by.
He, as soon as he saw her, immediately fell for her and did not hesitate for a moment to declare his love.
The girl, struck by this declaration, returned the Moor’s feelings with passion, but their story, which began with such ardor, was destined to be short-lived. Soon the young woman discovered that her beloved had to return to the East where a wife and children awaited him.
In the dead of night, feeling betrayed and humiliated, the girl gave in to a moment of jealousy and deadly rage, killing her Moor. She then cut off his head and made a sort of pot in which she planted a basil sprout that she cared for day by day.
The Moor, in this way, unable to leave anymore, would remain with her forever. Meanwhile, the basil grew lush and aroused the envy of all the neighborhood residents who, not to be outdone, had terracotta pots specially made in the shape of a Moor's Head.
Since then, the Moor's head has become one of the most famous symbols of Sicily and lives on in our jewelry, in the new Caltagirone collection.
